I don't understand why this wildcat is more popular than it is. To make it, you simply neck up the 5.56x45 case. It literally has no downsides, and beats the 5.56 in every way. All you need is a barrel change, everything else is the same.

Here is what it does better: * Better barrel life (Not that 5.56 doesn't have a great barrel life, but its still a plus) * Better selection of bullets for a different purpose's. In a standard AR-15 magazine, you can use bullets in the 55-87 grain range. * Puts a bigger hole in whatever you are shooting. * Much better ballistics than 5.56x45 in any barrel length with any similiar bullet weight.

Speaking of ballistics. Lets do some quick ballistic comparisons with the 5.56x45 and 6x45 in different barrel lengths with different bullet weights. In general, you can get 150 fps faster with the same bullet weight as 5.56, or you can get the same velocity as 5.56 with a bullet that weighs 10 grains more. (77 vs 87)

16 inch barrel * 5.56x45 mk262 - 77gr, BC=0.372. Muzzle Velocity= ~2700 fps, Muzzle Energy= 1246 ft lbs. At 500 yards, there is ~65 inches of drop, and is traveling at 1639 Fps for 459 ft lbs of energy. * 6x45, 87gr Amax, BC=.400. Muzzle Velocity= ~2700 fps. Muzzle Energy =1408 ft lbs. At 500 yards, there is ~63 inches of drop, is traveling 1702 Fps for 560 ft lbs of energy.

20 inch barrel * Mk262 77 gr, BC=.372. Muzzle velocity= 2850, Muzzle energy= 1389 ft lbs. At 500 yards, there is ~57 inches of drop, is traveling 1750 fps for 523 ft lbs of energy. * 6x45 87 gr Amax, BC= .400 Muzzle Velocity = 2850, muzzle energy = 1569 ft lbs. At 500 yards there is ~55 inches of drop, is traveling 1816 fps for 637 ft lbs of energy.

As you can see, the 6x45 beats the 5.56x45 by a good margin! So, why isn't the 6x45 a much more popular cartridge? It makes a beast of a carbine cartridge, and a beast of a DMR/SPR cartridge! Does everything the 5.56x45 can, but much better!
