=================================================================================

Greetings from Romania,

I'm in front of this dilemma ...after a long wait finally i'm in position to buy a new rifle.I found a SIG SHR 970 Match (second hand) at same price with a new Howa Model 1500 Varminter stainless (Hogue Full Length Aluminium Bedding Block stock)both in .308 , heavy barrel....

I intend to use the rifle as all around (i don't care about the weight ) , roe to wild boar also for some long range plinking (500-800 meters) for fun .

The question is SHR or Howa?

SHR seems to be a better build but is no longer supported so spare parts seems to be hard to find ...Howa is more common , wich one is more accurate? ...more reliable ?

Thank you

P.S. I apologise for my language , i used google translate to translate in Norwegian.

If you are satified with only MOA precision - go ahead and buy an SHR. :winke1: If you want more buy a Howa Varmint with a B&C Presicion stokk. A 20 MOA picatinny rail, a little adjustment on trigger weight and you are good to go as far as a 308 can take you. HB Howa's we do expect them to shot roughly 5 shot groups at approx 1/2 MOA with tailored handloads.

A Reminton LTR should do the same and also a Savage 10 BA/FCP HS or 10FCP MCM which should all be on top of your list of guns to checkout if you want a mid level 308 rifle which really shoots.

Just to inform you, I make my living out of selling all the above guns - except the SHR that I do not think are currently being represented by anyone in Norway.

Takk @ Sauer 150

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you @Sauer 150

So Howa will be a better shooter, this is an important thing for me.

I already have a 20 MOA picatinny rail which ca be fitted on Howa or Remington short action (a Recknagel from Roedale store) and for this rifle I already have a brand new IOR 3-18x42.

The hole story is like this in 3 October 2011 I ordered a Howa (226 days ago) I didn't got the rifle...yet , so SHR was a just an unexpected offer .

I'm am optimistic and patient person I hope till the international children's day (1 June) to get my toy :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not to forget...

Do you consider Bell and Carlson a better stock compared with Hogue?...this is because you can have a quality bedding more easy on B&C or is another reason ...regarding stiffness i was looking for full length aluminum block on Hogue. should be more rigid.

I was referring to the B&C's with the full bedding block. Rough it up a bit and apply a thin layer of bedding compound and you will have an extremely uniform and rigid platform to shot from.

If my memory serves me correctly a 700 SA rail will not fit a Howa SA, LA rails however are interchangeable. We more or less carry Warne rails exclusively. Attached the rings - true them thoroughly before mounting your scope for a stress free mount.

Your choice of scope is a very fine choice in my book, at least for the money spent. I personally prefer a Hensholdt 4-16x56FF for best overall performance as a hunting/long range scope but the price effectively prohibits having many of them :trist:

226 days is a looong wait for a standard gun - you are a very patient individual !

I checked with my dealer , he is able to provide me only Bell and Carlson Medalist Varmint/Tactical this one from the picture bellow (Bell and Carlson #: 6655-02)

My concern about this stock is the Monte Carlo cheek piece , i know sometime this shape of stock can "increase" the felt recoil compared with a more straight stock.

Sauer 150, do you have experience with this stock regarding felt recoil?

I'm not recoil sensitive .300 wm is for me more pleasant to shoot then my 12 ga but i consider also this aspect because i want to avoid factors who can develop flinching.

Thank you

Takk

I'm sorry to admit that I have not shot enough with the two myself to say anything valid about the preceived recoil of these two stock alternatives. I would howver not put to much emphasis on this since a 5 kg 308 rifle is no recoil monster regardless. Good luck with your choice - let us know how it turns out

Thank you for all good advices.

Rifle have less or no recoil (it is some odd recoil with Prvi Partizan GROM 170 gr hunting ammo in rest with other ammo my 51 kg wife have no problems shooting it :D )

I will come back with some groups (don't have pictures but is a laser) .

As few toughs....

I like it all except 1 thing , trigger.

Is the 2 stages one, is sett now to the lightest level and is not light enough in my humble opinion , after hunting season is over i intend to strip the trigger and to polish some faces (green part) , if i fail i will replace with a Timney or Basix .
